The Big Hole River valley, in the southwest corner of Montana, is one of the better places in the state to base a fly fishing trip. It is quiet, rural, and close to more water than you can fish in a week. That last part is the appeal, and it is the thing to plan around.
Here is how we think about using the valley as a base.
Where it is, and the drive that matters
The valley sits just off Interstate 15, a little over half an hour south of Butte. Butte is the practical hub: the nearest airport, groceries, and gear. Most stays in the area put you within about 30 minutes of the river, which is a short morning drive by Montana standards.
That drive time is the real variable when you choose where to stay. A place that looks remote on a map can still be a smart base if it gets you to the water quickly. One that looks central can cost you an hour each way. Check the actual route to where you plan to fish.
The fishing
The Big Hole is the draw, and it earns it. Within easy reach you also have the Beaverhead River and Clark Canyon Reservoir to the south, plus a scatter of mountain lakes and smaller streams. Between them you can fish a different kind of water most days.
The valley holds rainbow, brown, brook, and cutthroat trout, and the Big Hole is known for its run of native Arctic grayling, which is rare in the lower forty-eight. For more, see our guide to fly fishing the Big Hole River and our overview of trout fishing in Montana.
Beyond the water
This is wildlife country. Depending on the season you might see moose, deer, elk, and antelope, with eagles overhead. Early morning and evening are the times to look.
Winter changes the calculation. Snowy roads and driveways in the valley often call for traction devices or four-wheel drive. If you are coming in the cold months, ask about access before you book, and pack for it.
Picking a base
For a fishing trip, we would trade a fancier cabin for a shorter drive to the water every time. Decide which river or stretch you most want to fish, then look for a place to stay within a short drive of it. The valley is small enough that you will not be far from the rest.
